microbiology major to become a nurse practitioner?
fmag3 asked:
I intend on majoring in microbiology going into college. I’m considering being a doctor or a nurse. Is a microbiology major ok to become a nurse practitioner though or do I need to major in nursing? Or can I just take microbiology and then take some sort of exam to get into nursing school?

In order to become a nurse practitioner, you must first be a registered nurse. A nurse practitioner has a master’s degree in nursing and many times registered nurses go back to school in order to become NPs.
So if you get a B.S. in microbiology you will have to go back to get a nursing degree and master’s in nursing in order to be an NP. However, there are programs, like at the University of Rochester, where people with bachelor’s degrees are accepted into an accelerated NP program, getting both a bachelor and a master’s in nursing in a few years.
Otherwise, microbiology is a major that you can do many things with!
