I am trying to find a way to politely indicate in a cover letter that a friend referred me, but not to a specific job necessarily. What would be a good way to say this?

Maybe, “An associate of mine recommended that I research your company. He informed me that there are many exciting and fulfilling opportunities within your organization that I could apply my experience and work ethic to. I believe that if I had the chance to discuss my skills and qualifications with you in person, we would find an option that is mutually beneficial.” Maybe my grammar is bad (I ended one sentence with a preposition) but that was off the top of my head. Ya know, just emphasize that you’re so awesome, you’d be valuable to them in almost any position.
