I was wondering what career moves to make in order to get a job driving one of those huge mining dump trucks?

Get an entry-level job at a mine and work up to it.

I would probably set my career sites a bit higher than driving a dump truck though!!

Try contacting the Caterpillar truck driving training center. This is where lots of drivers at the mines get some training. Besides hands on training, Caterpillar has a “virtual trainer” designed to orient entry-level operators on basic hull truck operation from basic control familiarization to complex tasks. The software comes with a special joystick and all you need to provide is a chair for the base, computer and large TV screen. Caterpillar offers self-study or instructor-led programs. Here is a link to a video on the technology.
