Want to explore a career in data mining. What do I need to know to become an expert?

I’m in IT. I have been for 12 years. The concept of data mining interests me. Does anybody know any good resources for data mining? What are some industry standard applications? Where can I pick up and understand the terminology from? Are there any industry organizations or websites? Any help is appreciated.

Data mining includes a number of different activities. By far, most data mining today involves predictive modeling, but there is activity in other areas (clustering, association rules, information retrieval, etc.).
I suggest exploring KDnuggets (http://www.kdnuggets.com/). As it happens, KDnuggets is running their annual software survey, so you should be able to get some ideas from that.
Also, consider reviewing some of the data mining Web logs, such as:
Data Mining and Predictive Analytics
(http://abbottanalytics.blogspot.com/)
Data Mining Research

Keep in mind that data mining is closer to statistics and machine learning than it is to traditional programming or database work. I recommend any of the following books:
“Data Mining” by Witten and Frank
“Data Mining, Concepts and Techniques”, by Han and Kamber
“Predictive Data Mining” by Weiss and Indurkhya
