I’ve recently set up an interview with 24 Hour Fitness, but I’m not sure if I should create a cover letter to go along with my resume and references. Is it pointless to create a cover letter if you’ve already scored an interview? And if not, what should it say or include?

If you are presenting the resume by hand, not mailing it, I don’t think a cover letter is necessary.

I agree with the above poster, a cover letter is only really necessary if you don’t have the interview yet.

You should be fine.

If you believe that there are others who are interviewing for the same job, a cover letter will help cement you n the interviewer’s mind. The cover letter should be very specific about why you are qualified for the specific job you are seeking (as opposed to the resume, which tends to be general). The cover letter also will allow you the opportunity to tie diverse areas of experience directly to a job – for example, let’s say you are looking to move into a supervisory position, but have never supervised anyone in the workplace, the cover letter is the place to say something like “I led our church choir for over 5 years, selecting the music, scheduling practices, selecting soloists” which shows that you have experience that is not on your resume.

The letters should be three to four paragraphs long – one paragraph introducing why you are writing teh letter (mention the specific job), the next two tying your overall experiences to teh job, and the last one a thank you – I look forward to hearing from you type of thing.

Check the web for good examples of cover letters just to get a feel for what you can use.

Good luck :)
