What should I put in a resume cover letter?
Sendr98 asked:
I decided a while ago that I want to become an officer and there is a position that I wish to apply to. However, since I have no experience in this field (I currently work in marketing) What should I put in my cover letter? This is difficult because for almost any job you can do a search and find sample letters. But when I search cover letters for a police officer all I can find is one or 2 but they’re all loaded with experience from previous time as an officer. So I really don’t have any idea of where to start
What did you do when you were first getting off the ground?
the reason I need the cover letter is because it was a job posting in the paper for a probationary officer that said right on it to “drop off resume at bla bla bla”

There is no way your going to get hired without the education or experience in law enforcement. Your only hope is to know someone “inside” the agency that can get you hired.
Normally you just take the entrance test, then the PT test, then the oral board, psyche test, medical test, polygraph, and then go to the academy.
Having been hired by two Law Enforcement agencies I have never herd of anyone putting in a resume and cover letter.
But just put on the experience you have, most agencies are in need of good people now, so good luck!
Since you already have an idea of the purpose of the cover letter then I would suggest you look at the position and their requirements see if you can pick some of the things you can do example(team player, physical fitness, people person, eager to learn etc) In the cover letter mention that you are looking for a change in the career & have the following skills, Emphasis on you coming from out side of the law enforcement may bring a different prespective, skills that can be utilized at the postion.
I am not sure what your strong skill are but I would some how marry your skills and their needs and how you can be of help from outside.
.
Police spend the majority of their time dealing with people. If you have experience in social skills and problem solving, you are in pretty good shape.
Highlight your experience working with people, especially difficult people, along with problem solving skills, and any other areas of your current job that would relate to police work.
You didn’t mention your state, but in Wisconsin you can become an officer with an associates degree in any field, you just need to complete a 520 hour coures on law enforcement specific programs, such as firearms, law, vehicle operation, etc.
